An old foreman is killed, hit by a car. Commissioner Montalbano learns that he was a collaborator of a young building contractor who, twenty years earlier, had been accused and convicted of the murder of his partner and husband of his mistress; the entrepreneur had been released from prison a few weeks earlier. Meanwhile, a mysterious stranger is found killed by a gunshot to the back of the head not far from an isolated cottage. Thanks to the insistence of the entrepreneur's cousin, Commissioner Montalbano begins to suspect that there is a link between the death of the master builder and the release of the entrepreneur. Slowly the complex story unfolds, revealing that even the mysterious stranger is involved in the twenty-year affair of love and business.
