Het is 2005 in Raymond California, een bruisend stadje, een dwarsdoorsnede van de buitenwijken van Amerika.
De lokale dominee, Henry Maxwell, bereidt zich samen met zijn familie voor op een vis-uitje ergens op het platteland.
Als ze naar het kampeeradres rijden vindt er een tragisch auto ongeluk plaats, waarbij Henry's zwangere vrouw en zijn zoon omkomen.
Het verhaal verplaatst zich naar vandaag waarbij we zien dat het stadje van Raymond moeilijke tijden doormaakt.
De eens zo welvarende stad is nu nog maar een schaduw van zichzelf.
Op het toneel verschijnt Alex York, een ambitieus politicus die een casino naar de stad wil halen om zo het tij voor het stadje Raymond te keren.
Hij deinst voor niets terug en heeft zijn zinnen gezet op de perfecte locatie om zijn casino te bouwen; de grond van Henry Maxwells kerk.
York benaderd de welgestelde projectontwikkelaars van de stad om zijn casino te financieren.
Dingen veranderen wanneer een zwerver naar de stad komt.
Aangeraakt door het pleidooi van de zwerver om om te zien naar de armen en achtergestelden besluiten Henry en vijf invloedrijke kerkleden een verschil te gaan maken.
Elk van hen heeft besloten zijn leven te leven volgens de principes van Christus en Zijn manier van leven toe te passen in hun eigen leven.
Zal het Henry en ?de anderen lukken door gewoon een voorbeeld te zijn en door hun offers,
de andere bewoners van de stad tot andere gedachten te brengen?
Kunnen ze de anderen ertoe brengen samen te gaan werken en te vechten tegen de verleiding van geld en de makkelijke weg?

In His Steps takes place in the railroad town of Raymond, presumably located in the eastern U.S.A.

Henry Maxwell, pastor of the First Church of Raymond,
who challenges his congregation to not do anything for a whole year without first asking: “What Would Jesus Do?” Other characters include Ed Norman,
senior editor of the Raymond Daily Newspaper, Rachel Winslow, a talented singer, and Virginia Page, an heiress, to name a few.
The novel begins on a Friday morning when a man out of work appears at the front door of Henry Maxwell while the latter is preparing for that Sunday’s upcoming sermon.
Maxwell listens to the man’s helpless plea briefly before brushing him away and closing the door.
The same man appears in church at the end of the Sunday sermon, walks up to “the open space in front of the pulpit,” and faces the people. No one stops him.
He quietly but frankly confronts the congregation—“I’m not complaining; just stating facts.”—about their compassion,
or apathetic lack thereof, for the jobless like him in Raymond. Upon finishing his address to the congregation, he collapses, and dies a few days later.
That next Sunday, Henry Maxwell, deeply moved by the events of the past week, presents a challenge to his congregation: “Do not do anything without first asking, ‘What would Jesus do?
This challenge is the theme of the novel and is the driving force of the plot.
From this point on, the rest of the novel consists of certain episodes that focus on individual characters as their lives are transformed by the challenge.
