De negenjarige Kiek is energiek en stoer, maar raakt bezorgd wanneer haar vader als arts naar een oorlogsgebied vertrekt. Hij kan een ziekte krijgen, of een ongeluk en er zijn zelfs verdwaalde kogels! Om de kans te verkleinen dat er iets met hem gebeurt, wringt ze zich in vreemde bochten: ze heeft een dode hond en een dode muis nodig. Kiek kent namelijk niemand die een dode muis, een dode hond èn een dode vader heeft. Dat is een kleine kans.
