There is a legend about a great bell, called "The Mother of Voices," made of pure gold, three times the size of a man, made by monks many years ago... This is the story told in the marketplace by a Viking called Rolfe. This information finds its way to the Islamic ruler Aly Manush, who is obsessed with finding the bell. But Rolfe claims not to know where the bell is, and escapes, back to his homeland, to convince his father and brother to give him a ship and crew to replace the one he lost - or to help him steal the Death Ship which belongs to the king - because he does know where the bell is...

Wanneer de Noorman schipbreukeling Rolfe op een markt spreekt over de legendarische puur gouden klok, genaamd de 'Moeder Aller Stemmen',
neemt de Moorse koning Aly Mansuh hem gevangen. Rolfe vertelt hem dat de klok slechts een mythe is en weet alvorens ze hem martelen te ontsnappen.
Wanneer Rolfe weer bij zijn eigen volk arriveert, laat hij zijn vader weten de locatie van de klok te kennen.
Samen met zijn broer steelt Rolfe de drakenboot die hun vader voor koning Harald Blauwtand heeft laten bouwen.
Tevens ontvoeren ze de dochter van de koning opdat deze geen wraak zal nemen op hun vader.
Harald Blauwtand zweert alle zeeën af te struinen tot hij zijn dochter gevonden heeft.
Het noodlot bepaalt dat de broers en hun bemanning stranden op de kust van het land van Aly Mansuh, die hen allemaal gevangen neemt.
Om executie te voorkomen belooft Rolfe de klok te vinden voor Aly Mansuh.
