DESCRIPTION
This fact based drama chronicles the last journey of Willem Barentsz and Jacob van Heemskerk on their search for a new passage to the Indies. Due to icy waters, they are stranded on the island of Novaya Zemlya and have to spend the winter there. The story is told through the eyes of Gerrit de Veer, an officer on the same voyage, and is loosely based on the famous diary he published in 1598 after his safe return.

Nova Zembla vertelt het legendarische, waargebeurde verhaal van de avontuurlijke ontdekkingsmissie van Willem Barentsz (Derek de Lint), dat destijds is opgetekend door het jonge bemanningslid Gerrit de Veer (Robert de Hoog). In het 16e eeuwse Amsterdam waarin de scheepsbemanning wordt samengesteld is Gerrit de Veer assistent van de bekende dominee Petrus Plancius (Jan Decleir) en bovendien verliefd op diens mooie dochter Catharina (Doutzen Kroes). Als grote initiator van de ontdekkingsreis besluit Plancius heimelijk om de bleue Gerrit mee te sturen op de expeditie van Barentsz en Heemskerck (Victor Reinier) om te bewijzen de liefde van zijn dochter waard te zijn.
