DESCRIPTION

Into the abyss explores a triple murder which occurred in the small Texas City of Conroe in 2001. Michael Perry and Jason Burkett, under the influence of alcohol and drugs, murdered a middle-aged housewife; they then gunned down her stepson and his friend. The film features Conversations with the two inmates and those affected by their crime. Unlike many of the films that deal with crimes, into the abyss isn't concerned with figuring out exactly what happened, but rather serves as an examination of why people - and the state - kill.

Herzog richt zich in deze documentaire op een drievoudige moord die tien jaar geleden gepleegd werd in Conroe, Texas. Aan het woord komen de nabestaanden, maar ook de veroordeelden, met inbegrip van de man in de dodencel, acht dagen voor zijn executie. Het schijnbare motief voor de moorden was om een auto te stelen om daarmee te kunnen joyriden. De veroordeelde moordenaars zijn twee tieners, Michael Perry en Jason Burkett, die een geschiedenis van drugsmisbruik en geweldpleging hebben. Ze ontkennen hun eigen aandeel en geven elkaar de schuld. Herzog duikt in de erfenis van deze misdaad en in de psyche van de betrokken personen.
