Air is the most commonly used insulating medium for electrical equipment. Over a century, air discharge phenomena have been extensively investigated, both experimentally and theoretically. The issue to be solved for air insulation is how to determine the breakdown voltages of various gap geometries under different applied voltage types, which contributes to selecting suitable electrode structure and gap distance, so as to guide the insulation design of electrical equipment. Up to now, air discharge theory is not yet perfect, and therefore it is difficult to determine the breakdown voltage accurately by theoretical calculation. The engineering design still relies on the measured data and empirical laws obtained by discharge tests.
