DESCRIPTION
A lonely and friendless boy finds and untangles a hurt dolphin that is caught in a crab trap. He becomes very attached to the dolphin when the tail must be taken off to save the dolphin's life. The boy believes the dolphin would be able to swim normally if it was given a prosthetic tail.

film over een jongetje dat vriendschap sluit met een gewonde dolfijn...
Het gaat niet best op school met de elfjarige Sawyer en om die reden stuurt zijn moeder Lorraine (Ashley Judd) hem ook tijdens de grote vakantie naar school. Onderweg naar die zomerkwelling hoort hij een man om hulp roepen en als hij het strand op rent ziet hij een in touwen gewikkelde aangespoelde vrouwtjesdolfijn. Het dier is behoorlijk gewond en om die reden neemt het opgetrommelde personeel van Clearwater zeedierenziekenhuis haar mee voor nader onderzoek. Na school gaat Sawyer direct naar het ziekenhuis toe en dat is maar goed ook, want de dolfijn reageert uitzonderlijk goed op haar redder en mogelijk is dat de enige kans om haar leven te redden. Winter, zo genoemd door leeftijdsgenootje Hazel wiens vader Clay (Harry Conwick Jr.) het ziekenhuis runt, is er niet goed aan toe. Haar staart is niet meer te redden en zelfs nadat Sawyer haar na een amputatie aan het zwemmen heeft gekregen, loopt haar leven nog gevaar. Door puur toeval maakt Sawyer kennis met prothesespecialist Cameron McCarthy (Morgan Freeman) en die ontmoeting brengt hem op een wat onorthodox idee...
Dieren en kinderen in de film, dan denk je al snel aan Disney. Dolphin Tale is van een andere filmstudio, maar zeker Disney-waardig. Onbaatzuchtig gedrag, opoffering en gewonde militairen, echt alles wordt uit de kast getrokken om van Dolphin Tale de ultieme familiefilm te maken. Eerlijk gezegd zijn ze daar erg goed in geslaagd, want dit is misschien wel de grootste door een dier gedomineerde tearjearker sinds Free Willy...
