DESCRIPTION
A weed smoking, friend to the underworld, bad behaving vice questore is sent from Rome to Aosta, in the Alps, for unknown (but likely for indiscipline) reasons. Nevertheless he is one hell of a cop and immediately gains respect and co-operation from colleagues. An unusual location, gorgeous landscapes, sturdy noir plots sum up for one of the best series ever produced in Italy. Rocco Schiavone is Salvo Montalbano in reverse.

Weed smoking, foulmouthed Rocco Schiavone is an offbeat Deputy Commissioner of the State Police. For disciplinary reasons he is transferred to the snowbound town of Val D'Aosta, far from his beloved Rome. The sophisticated but cranky Roman despises the mountains, the cold, and the provincial locals as much as he disdains his superiors and their petty rules. But he loves solving crimes.
^^ that official synopsis is a little unfair as it makes Schiavone sound like a right knob. Truth is, he's very likeable and has a good attitude towards colleagues he likes. As for being foul mouthed, that's rubbish. Calling someone who's a dickhead, a dickhead, doesn't make that person foul mouthed, it makes them honest. When you see the utter nitwittedness and incompetence of two of his colleagues in particular, I'm sure you'll agree.
