De verzekeringsmakelaar Mickey Prohaska (Greg Kinnear) probeert een manier te vinden om z'n job een nieuwe impuls te geven , z'n relatie met z'n vervreemde vrouw te herstellen en het mistroostige weer in het Midwesten achter zich te laten. Deze zelfverklaarde meester-bedrieger gelooft dat verkoop alles te maken heeft met het vertellen van een verhaal - het enige wat hij nodig heeft is een idioot die zo dom is om het te slikken. Hij denkt z'n slag te kunnen slaan bij een oude gepensioneerde boer, die iets veel waardevollers te bieden heeft dan een verzekeringscommissie: een uiterst zeldzame viool die stof ligt te verzamelen in een hoek van z'n boerderij. Z'n plannetje om de oude man te bedriegen loopt echter uit de hand en Mickey raakt verwikkeld in een web van bedrog en morele dubbelzinnigheid.
