A group from San Francisco, California, formed in 1966 under the name "Purple Earthquake". At first, they performed in college campus clubs and surrounding ballrooms. Their manager was Matthew King Kaufman, who signed a contract with A&M Records in 1970. Changing their name to Earth Quake, the band released their debut album in 1971. A year later, the label released the band's second album Why Don't You Try Me?. Both albums were not widely known. Seeing and understanding the label's incompetence in working with the band, and having experienced disappointment, as well as winning a small compensation for the unauthorized use of their music in the Sam Peckinpah film The Getaway, Kaufman created his own label, Berserkley Records, in 1973, where Earth Quake released 4 more albums. In July 1973, ex-Copperhead guitarist Gary Phillips, also known as "Philippet", joined the band. The group lasted until the mid-80s. Gary Phillips died in 2007 at the age of 59. John Doukas died on March 19, 2011 in South Africa at the age of 62.
