DESCRIPTION
Five people are sitting in a New York bar with a mysterious Mr. Ohman, when they hear the news that the godless Communists are invading the good ol' U.S. of A. The five rush off to various sections of the country to do their part to stop the invasion, when an A-bomb crashes down upon Manhattan.
Sinopsis by IMDBInvasion USA (1952)
The exploitation masterpiece Invasion USA begins when a mysterious stranger
(Academy Award nominee Dan O’Herlihy) engages a diverse group of Manhattan bar
patrons in a discussion on the best way to beat Communism. Suddenly, a real
Red Alert is declared and enemy parachutists by the thousands begin landing on
American soil! Soon atom bombs are dropping, skyscrapers are crumbling and
fifth columnists are taking over key industries. Through it all, a suave,
street-smart reporter (Gerald Mohr) and a beautiful debutante (Peggie Castle)
desperately try to find time for romance amid the chaos.
The producers of Invasion USA – a motion picture made during the height of the
Cold War – dared to show audiences what World War III might look like. By
making ingenious use of stock footage, models and other special effects, the
filmmakers created a film that makes for an indelible viewing experience.
This is pop culture history at its most explosive!
Red Nightmare (1962)
Produced under the “personal supervision” of Jack L. Warner, the Red Scare
classic had a budget and a cast (Jack Webb, Jack Kelly, Andrew Duggan) that
was unheard of for a government educational film of its era. Indeed, not many
government shorts before or since have been featured in Daily Variety as
Freedom And You (later retitled Red Nightmare by the studio to give it more
“punch”) was.
“Film will depict contrast between concept of American freedom and life under
Communism,” reported Variety in a February 28, 1962 article announcing the
picture’s imminent production. “It will be part of the Defense Department’s
long-range program to strengthen servicemen’s faith in his American heritage
and to acquaint him with the dangers of Communism.”
The story presents Jerry Donovan (Jack Kelly) as a complacent citizen who
experiences a dream in which his town has been taken over by Communists.
Jack Webb acts as narrator, antagonist and muse.
In a 1987 interview, Red Nightmare screenwriter Vincent Forte recalled the
high level guidance he received in scripting his propaganda masterpiece:
“Jack Warner was very gung-ho in that area (anti-communism). He wanted the
message spelled out in very blunt terms. He wanted us to hit ‘em over the
head with it.”
Decades later, Red Nightmare is both a historical artifact AND an essential
title – alongside Invasion USA (1952), Red Dawn (1984) and Amerika
(1987 TV miniseries) – in the subgenre of “Soviet America” cinema.

The shocking spoken word “flipside” to If The Bomb Falls dramatizes an actual
H-bomb attack on a fictional city as witnessed by a woefully complacent
American.

July 25, 1961 speech to the nation on the crisis in Berlin.
