The Gion Festival is one of the largest and most famous festivals in Japan, taking place annually during the month of July in Kyoto. Many events take place in central Kyoto and at the Yasaka Shrine, the festival's patron shrine, located in Kyoto's famous Gion district, which gives the festival its name. It is formally a Shinto festival, and its original purposes were purification and pacification of disease-causing entities. There are many ceremonies held during the festival, but it is best known for its two Yamaboko Junko processions of floats, which take place on July 17 and 24.
This film is part of our collection of film pioneer Hans Berge's (1877-1934) silent movie productions.
The collection consists mainly of actuality films, recordings made in order to inform the public without interpreting events. During the silent era, films were often shown as part of longer programs or as shorts prior to the main attraction of the evening. They were also used in lecture settings. The content resembles the TV news reports of today, and covers topics such as state visits, sporting events and depictions of places near and far.
The Hans Berge Collection, from 1905 to 1934, consists of his own recordings, but also contains foreign films that he likely bought or traded during several travels abroad. The recordings were adapted for a Norwegian audience by translating the intertitles. Berge then distributed the films to Norwegian cinemas. Many of the films are missing titles, and very little is known about several of many the productions." (The National Library of Norway)
