Rosa, een jonge Westerse vrouw slaagt erin stage te mogen lopen bij een wereldberoemde meesterkok, die in Tokyo een gelauwerd visrestaurant beheert. Uiteraard hoopt zij zich de "geheimen" van de meester eigen te kunnen maken. Zij wordt echter niet in de kookkeuken zelf geplaatst, maar in een ruimte waar de vis wordt schoongemaakt en waar ze helemaal op zichzelf wordt teruggeworpen. Wekenlang snijdt ze zwijgend dode vissen van hun graat, want zolang ze zich de taal noch het denken van haar leermeester eigen maakt, kan ze hem slechts imiteren. Als ze besluit om in de avonduren wat te gaan bijverdienen, beginnen het gebrek aan communicatie, de onzekere positie in de keuken en de innerlijk gevoerde gesprekken haar parten te spelen.
