Het verhaal begint in Parijs waar Susan, de zus van Bailey, de charismatische Fransman Jacques ontmoet.Susan nodigt hem uit voor lunch waarna ze hem inhuurt als gids zolang ze in de stad is. Ondertussen in New Jersey zijn de zielsverwanten Bailey en Mary nog steeds goede vrienden nadat een relatie in hun jeugd abrupt eindigde.Nu ze getrouwd is met Wiley en de moeder is van een autistische zoon begint Mary's huwelijk af te brokkelen.Haar vriendschap met Bailey biedt haar de troost waaraan het haar in haar huwelijk ontbreekt.
