DESCRIPTION
Marshal Flagg, an aging lawman about to be retired, hears that his old nemesis, the outlaw McKaye, is back in the area and planning a robbery. Riding out to hunt down McKaye, Flagg is captured by McKaye's gang and finds out that McKaye is no longer the leader of the gang, but is considered just an aging relic by the new leader, a youngster named Waco. Waco orders Mackaye to shoot Flagg, and when Mackaye refuses Waco abandons both of them. Flagg then takes Mackaye back to town only to find out that he has been "retired", and when he sees how clueless and incompetent the new marshal and the city fathers are, he persuades Mackaye that it is up to the two of them to stop Waco and his gang from ravaging the town.

The Good Guys and the Bad Guys is an American western first released in 1969, directed by Burt Kennedy. The film stars Robert Mitchum, George Kennedy and Martin Balsam. Our overall rating for this film is: good.
Burt Kennedy's characteristically affectionate Western comedy sees ageing sheriff Mitchum join forces with his old bandit enemy George Kennedy to outwit Carradine and his gang of younger, rather less honorable robbers, and in so doing, cock a snook at Balsam, the opportunist and self-inflated mayor who has demanded Mitchum's retirement.
In noting the passing of the Old West, and upholding honour and age over expediency and youth, Kennedy comes closer to the Peckinpah of Ride the High Country than of The Wild Bunch; even so, the humour here is broad and cheery rather than elegiac and violent. The performances are delightful throughout, and Kennedy, quite rightly, gives them free rein.
The plot for "The Good Guys," is one of the basic Western themes: An aging marshal is deprived of his badge, and then sets out single-handed to prove himself and bring the bad guys to a painful end.
It has quite a climax; the best this year in a Western, I'd say. Kennedy stages a chase scene on a train (featuring a conductor played by John Carradine) that's as thrilling and funny as the train chase in "The Great Bank Robbery" was meant to be. This is the payoff, and it works; and there are good character roles for Martin Balsam, Tina Louise and Marie Windsor earlier along the road. But Mitchum eventually has to carry the picture, as he has carried so many before.
