DESCRIPTION
After a serial killer named Red John murdered Patrick Jane's wife and daughter, Jane dedicated his life to hunting down and killing Red John. To that end he gave up his lucrative pretense of being a psychic and joined the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as a consultant to the team responsible for investigating the Red John case, led by Senior Agent Teresa Lisbon. Using Jane's exceptional gift for observation and his mentalist tric able to close an unprecedented number of cases, but Jane's unconventional and often outright illegal methods also bring much censure down on Lisbon's head, making his assistance both a blessing and a curse. L'équipe du California Bureau of Investigation (CBI), dirigée par Teresa Lisbon, enquête sur des crimes, avec la collaboration de Patrick Jane, consultant pour le CBI, utilisant ses facultés de mentalisme.
Cependant, c'est sur le cas particulier de John le Rouge (Red John en VO), un tueur en série qui signe toujours ses meurtres par un smiley dessiné avec le sang de ses victimes sur les murs, que se centre leur attention. John le Rouge a tué la femme et la fille de Patrick Jane, qui autrefois se faisait passer pour un médium et s'était moqué du tueur.
Patrick Jane dispose d'un sens très fin de la psychologie humaine et de son mental (lecture froide, hypnose…). Il ne s'agit pas d'un pouvoir car il a aussi été prestidigitateur (il use de cet art dans certains épisodes), plus précisément un mentaliste, ce qui lui vaut d'être également un manipulateur très efficace pour résoudre les enquêtes.
