Death In Paradise is een verhaal over een typisch Engels agent die geplaatst wordt, of eigenlijk misplaatst wordt, op het Caribische eiland Saint-Marie. Voor iemand anders zou het paradijs zijn, maar voor Detective Inspector Richard Poole (gespeeld door Miller) is het de hel!
Richard is totaal niet geschikt voor de Caribische manier van leven: hij heeft een hekel aan de zon, zee en zand en is niet gewend aan de lokale manier van wetshandhaving. Maar hij is een briljante rechercheur wiens eerste zaak op het eiland het onderzoek naar de moord op een Britse agent is.
