Violent Playground brings a sincere semi-documentary touch to the matter of juve delinquency. James Kennaway’s human and literate screenplay is convincingly acted against authentic Liverpool backgrounds. Result is an absorbing film that works up to a tense climax.

Film concerns an experiment made in Liverpool in 1949. Policemen have become Juvenile Liaison Officers whose job is to keep an eye on mischievous youngsters and steer them away from crime. Stanley Baker gives a vigorous and sympathetic performance as a cop who is taken off the investigation of a series of unexplained fires for this work. He becomes particularly involved with one family and discovers who is responsible for the arson.

There are a number of other very creditable performances, notably David McCallum as the young delinquent, Peter Cushing as a very serious but wholehearted priest, Clifford Evans as a schoolmaster and in her first big chance, as David McCallum’s elder sister, Anne Heywood.

Violent Playground opens with a few West Side Story style shots of a Liverpool street gang, commandeered by a very nasty-looking David McCallum.
