Summary



 "King Lear has three daughters, but no sons. Boldly he makes a decision to

divide his kingdom among his children, but fails to anticipate the consequences of

his actions. His generosity is cruelly repaid and Lear finds himself adrift,

wandering homeless and destitute. As he comes to realize the false values by which

he has lived, he finally encounters his own humanity."

My notes



  This upload adds subtitles for the play.  I had posted it earlier from another

source.  The detail is all the same including featurettes.  I recommend people get

the full DVD with the written notes.  Those notes explain a bit about the non-

traditional style of this production.  In particular the concept of 'the lord of

misrule tradition.'  I immediately thought of King Ubu in this regard which is in my

file group and posted a short time ago.  It will be added to the current index.

Lord of Misrule might also apply to the version of The Taming of the Shrew by the

Globe which features the Christopher Sly scene usually not played.  That will be

added to this index in time.



  And it is coincidental that this Lear is posted after a documentary on eldercare

which gives it another ring of truth.



  Anjana Vasan has a growing career.  She was in Behind The Beautiful Forevers

and the Lear and will appear again in Globe Theatre Mid Summer Night's Dream

directed for the Globe by Emma Rice.  That will be posted to this index as well.
